Christmas/New Year Greeting
December 12, 2011
With Christmas fast approaching I hope you make time to take a well earned break and to celebrate with your families, friends, neighbours and wider community. I think it is timely to think of those who may not be able to; especially we remember our soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
As any year draws to a close, I always believe it is a good time to pause and reflect on the previous twelve months.
2011 began quite tragically in Australia, with Queensland suffering extreme flooding, which claimed nine lives and caused many to become homeless. Just as the State was recovering from that disaster, Cyclone Yasi hit the Queensland coast causing further destruction and hindered clean-up efforts following the floods.
Then in March, the world watched in horror as a tsunami swamped Japan claiming more than 15,000 lives and causing widespread catastrophic damage. These heartbreaking natural disasters should make everyone be grateful for their family, friends and community and remind us of how lucky we are, and to never take it for granted.
Flooding interstate meant that South Australia received its best River Murray flows since 1993. It was great to see tourism once again flourishing in towns along the River Murray and many of the parched wetlands and lagoons filled with water, encouraging wildlife to return. I look forward to spending Christmas on the Murray. It really is a wonderful place to wind down and enjoy the wonders of nature. It was also fantastic to see Cadel Evans take out the 2011 Tour de France - a great sporting achievement for Australia.
This year was a year of political change, with new Premier Weatherill taking the reins from Mike Rann in October. It will be interesting to see if he continues with the poor policy decisions of his predecessor. 2012 I am sure will prove that although it is a different leader, it is the same Labor circus!
This Christmas I ask you to spare a thought for those who are less fortunate, facing hardship, are alone, sick or have lost loved ones.
Also take the time to pay tribute to all the individuals and groups who do so much to bring Christmas cheer and care to those in need. With the cost of living on the rise, more people than ever are needing assistance. I pay tribute to the many community service groups and organisations who work so hard to help others. Christmas is the time of giving, so if you possible can I encourage you to give generously to the various appeals and causes - any donations, big or small, will be gratefully accepted.
Christmas is a time to rejoice and spend quality time with family and loved ones. I urge you all, despite having busy lifestyles to continue this throughout the coming year - take the opportunity to spend time with loved ones and tell them how special they are.
Kay and I are forever mindful of the wonderful support we receive from so many of you. We would like to wish you a joyous Christmas and a happy, safe and rewarding 2012.
